what we've been up to lately

Over the border

I recently spent a week with friends in sunny Scotland, actually it was very sunny and absolutely beautiful. There was plenty of time for walking and cycling (At least until I managed to bend my back wheel in half). We even found time to visit Edinburgh and wander around the Fringe Festival. A definite highlight was Loretta Maine, a sozzled singer songwriter who slurred her way through songs and stories about murdering ex boyfriends and her record labels lack of commitment to her music. Much fun was had by all.

Good news from the web side of our business. We have just successfully moved our hosting capabilities to a new Server House, the excellent Blue Square Data Centre in Maidenhead. The move gives us greater flexible with a wider product portfolio and better security. If your looking to build, update or move your website we think we can offer you a very good personalized one to one service package that could save you money without the headaches.

Sounds great

The new Apogee audio interface arrived this week. David and Bryan are now running identical systems for music and audio production.

The new setups use Apple Logic Pro recording studio and Apogee audio/digital convertor hardware. It just makes it so much easier and consistent when audio tracks are moved around between designers.

The new Apogees sound quality is truly amazing.

Augmented Reality

If you want to see the future today take a look at Augmented Reality. Either visit the band Lost Valentinos website on www. lostvalentinos .com or see the Toyota ad click on the image to the right. This technology is still in its infancy but judging by the results it’s going to open up a whole new world. Imagine children’s books or live music it’s mind-boggling.

Mmmm tasty Apple

So, our eagerly anticipated Apple Ipad arrived last week and it took no less than a minute to fall in love with it. The interface is so intuitive and the slidey-smooth touch screen is just beautifully responsive, its ease of use is delightful….. Ok, enough gushing, is it actually any good? Well I'm not ashamed to say that it is good, infact it's very good. Let's get one thing straight, it's not a laptop and it doesn't pretend to be. What it is however, is a media browser - the internet, videos, music, and games - you can do it all and it all feels great.

ICT in CEIAG Conference 2010

I’d like to thank Hilary (Nickell) and Pete (Hulce) for inviting Whitelight to their annual ICT in CEIAG conference. Though there as an exhibitor I couldn’t resist doing as many workshops as possible over the two days. I loved Kieron Kirkland’s workshop, Greater Expectations. Kieron had a wonderful way of including everybody. His subject, digital technologies can support young people to engage with their rights and entitlements was both fascinating and enlightening.

Pete’s PowerPoint Puzzle workshop was a real laugh. I shared a table with the girls from Careers Wales. Far from being a PowerPoint whiz kid I found the whole experience brilliant fun. It’s easy to see how the small things can have a big impact in the classroom. Thanks Pete.

I’d like to say hello to everybody who attended and hope to see you there next year. Best wishes Bryan.

Hello Lambeth

We are really chuffed to be working with the Lambeth Council.

The Council has commissioned Whitelight to re-brand the Lambeth Consortium. We’ve put together some ideas and it looks like we have a clear winner. Part of the brief is to develop working literature templates that could be used in-house by the Consortium. As you can imagine using universally accessible templates can have a very real cost saving benefit to the council.

David Neal joins Whitelight

We are very fortunate to have David join Whitelight. David will take on the central role of Art Director within the team. We couldn’t make up our minds what to say about David’s strengths so we’ve asked his Mum to write a few words.

"David is a lovely boy. Much more handsome than his picture. When David was a small boy he loved drawing and making things. I knew one day he’d do something creative. David plays in a band as well. Good luck David."

Take Part Pathfinder Video

We’re just in the final stages of editing the Portsmouth City Councils Take Part Pathfinder video. What an eye opener the whole experience has been. Take Part is all about encouraging you and me to get involved in our community. On the journey to produce the video we discovered the most amazing people. People with truly altruistic motives getting stuck in and making a contribution to their community.

We'd like to thank everybody involved for their time and effort, especially Jonty (Sexton) our producer and director, who did an amazing job.

We hope that the video encourages more people to ‘get involved’.
